The most common — and most expensive — side effect of a website redesign is a sharp drop in organic traffic after launch. The cause is rarely the design itself; it is usually changed URLs, lost content and misconfigured technical settings. The checklist below will help you manage the migration safely.
Before the redesign
- Crawl your current site and build an inventory of every URL.
- Identify the pages with the most traffic in Search Console and Analytics.
- List the pages that have earned backlinks.
- Record your current rankings and traffic (for comparison later).
During development
- Prepare a 301 redirect plan that maps old URLs to new ones.
- Don't delete important content; redirect pages that are merged.
- Keep or improve titles, meta descriptions and headings.
- Make sure the staging environment is closed to search engines.
On launch day
- Test the 301 redirects in bulk.
- Check robots.txt and noindex settings.
- Submit the new sitemap to Search Console.
- Verify canonical tags and hreflang settings.
- Check that analytics and conversion tracking are working.
The first eight weeks after launch
- Monitor crawl errors and 404s in Search Console daily.
- Track the indexing status of important pages.
- Compare traffic and rankings with the previous period.
- Add any missing redirects.
With a well-planned migration, short-term fluctuations are normal. Within a few weeks traffic usually returns to its previous level — and thanks to the improved technical structure, it often climbs higher.
